Spremy Electric Tomato Strainer Review

(More customer reviews)I bought this press last year and used it to press 7 bushels of tomatoes that I purchased from a nearby farm. It was my first tomato press, but I have some experience using an older one at my boyfriend's house, who's been pressing tomatoes since he was young - as a yearly tradition. This press was much more efficient (made significantly less waste) than the older one. The motor worked well, and it got through the seven bushels fairly fast without making too much of a mess (we were careful of course). It's only flaw as far as I can tell, is that the entrance at the top where the tomatoes go in is a bit too small, so almost all of the tomatoes we had needed to be cut in half before putting them into the press. We had medium sized roma tomatoes, and so far as I can tell, this would be true for most types with the exception of cherry tomatoes. With that said, I definitely plan on using it again next year, and I think it was well worth the cost. If you're considering getting one of the hand crank ones, I would strongly advise against it, and recommend this one instead, since it would save you a lot of effort, especially for bigger jobs.

This is what you need. It removes virtually all the seeds, and quickly.
The gadget you attach it to is a food strainer. There are several choices of sieve screens, for fine (this one) to coarse (salsa).
To prepare apples, just remove the blossom end and stems. Cook, sieve, done. For tomato juice or sauce, quarter and cook, then sieve. Ready to can or cook down to sauce. It really saves time.

Home Style CIFVS Cast Iron Fruit and Vegetable Strainer Review

(More customer reviews)I was very disappointed with the packaging to start with. The outside shipping box was fine, no dents or problems. But the inside box, the orginal fruit strainer box looks like it was sat on by an elephant. The box was totally falling apart, why would you ship a product in a box that was already destroyed. The plastic bowl to put the fruit in was mashed and dirty, stained from the cast iron pieces. The 'Cast iron' base is the cheapest 'pop metal' my husband calls it. The washer won't stay in place around the handle so the fruit juice will leak everywhere. This was supposed to be a gift. But it looks like the cheapest imitation of a food strainer. I tried to get information to return this product but neither Amazon or ANTonline who shipped the product can 'find' my order. Even with the order number provided on the package and/or Email reciept. Convienent right! Besides by the time you are out shipping to get it here, shipping to return it and a restocking fee; they made sure it is not cost effective in any way to return this product. I am very dissappointed in both Amazon and ANTonline. I have to buy another gift for my daughter in law now. DON'T BUY THIS PRODUCT. SPEND A LITTLE MORE AND BE GLAD YOU DID. I own a Back to Basics food strainer and have used it for years. It works well. Stick with a better product.

Roma Food/Veg Strainer Review

(More customer reviews)I have used this Roma Vegetable Strainer for making apple sauce twice. Previously I have used the Victorio strainer (very nice and sturdy, but no longer available) and Back to Basics (stronger than the Roma in my opinion, but not as good as the Victorio - it had a lot of parts to lose and was not rust resistant). The Roma is easy to put together and seems to be rust resistant, but is weak, flimsy, unstable, and doesn't hold on my counter well with either the suction or the clamp.Things I like about the Roma Strainer:
* Pieces attach easily without nuts and bolts
* Seem to be rust resistant (The Back-to-Basics strainer that I bought 15 years ago had some parts that would rust)
* Plastic cone that takes the waste (seeds, core and skin) away is farther from the sauce dispenser, making it easier to have various shapes of bowls.Things I dislike about the Roma Strainer:
* The suction cup does not hold on my smooth quartz counter-top. Nice try, but it doesn't work.
* I have a bull-nose (rounded edge) to my counter-top so the clasp doesn't work very well either - it isn't long enough to reach around the bull-nose. So, it starts wiggling fairly quickly and isn't very stable, with no way to attach it more firmly.
* The handle is much harder to turn than the old Victorio (purchased 30 years ago) or Back-to-basics (purchased 16 years ago) strainers I have previously used. As I turn the handle, the vertical support seems to wobble or bend a bit, as though it isn't very strong.
* The handle seems a bit flimsy.
* Turning the handle is stiffer with more resistance than with the other strainers I have used before. (You tire more quickly.
* I have to run the waste product through 2 x as there is a lot of good applesauce that goes out with it.
The materials and workmanship are poorer quality. Some of the features (fewer parts to get lost) are nicer. Overall, though, my experience is that it is not nearly as good or as easy to use as the other strainers I have used in the past.

(More customer reviews)Sometimes you just can't win. I've seen the other reviews whining that the included strainer isn't fine enough to catch all debris in leftover frying oil. Well, if Norpro had made the strainer finer, I'm certain we'd see people complaining that the strainer was too fine! This is a well-made funnel; I've had mine for years. Unlike plastic funnels, which never really feel clean after dealing with grease and oil, this one cruises through the dishwasher w/o problems. I have used the strainer for oil, but it is on the coarse side. However, I find this funnel works great with a Melitta #2 coffee filter, which I use for my small coffeemaker. I don't like using cheesecloth as it's a hassle. I'd suggest going to a coffee filter as an alternative. Additionally, I can pour hot oil after frying at a temp that would damage a plastic funnel.

the machine is well built, and the instructions were made designed the way you could follow them easily. most products i buy, the instructions do not have empathy for the user who must assemble and use the product.

I simmer quartered apples - seeds, cores, peels, and all - until tender, then send them through the strainer. In minutes, I have fresh, hot applesauce. The refuse is expelled through the end and into another bowl, so you never have to worry about all that peeling and coring.
Tomato sauce? Just as easy. Fresh quartered tomatoes go in one end; the juice/pulp and the seeds come out separately. After that, it's only a matter of cooking the sauce down.

(More customer reviews)This gizmo makes the shortest work of making applesauce you ever imagined. You slice the apples, cook in a large pan with a small amount of water until they are soft. Then you push the apple mush, skins, seeds, core, stems, etc. in the top of the food grinder, and out the sieve part comes pure applesauce, out the end, comes the seeds, skin and stem. It takes maybe 10 minutes to process a 16qt pot of cooked apples.
I usually get every burner on my stove going, heat the pots of apples, process the mush into sauce, then can the lot. The canning part takes the longest.
Anyway if you can apple sauce, you need this tool.

Bought it for tomatoes to make sauce and juice, but after reading booklet found out other uses such as raspberry juice (we use for homemade ice cream) I used to strain the berries through cheese cloth and clean pantyhose to get out seeds, but with this not only do i get clean juice but more of it as you can reprocess the "waste" several times. I would highly recommend this item. Save yourself the trouble and just buy the extra screens when you purchase the base kit.
