Vita-Mix 1320 Professional Series, Platinum Review

Vita-Mix 1320 Professional Series, Platinum

My wife and I have two Vita-Mix blenders. We bought one at a fair 6 years ago, and picked up a new-in-the-box commercial model at an auction about 3 years ago. We have used both heavily. Vita-Mix blenders are tall (too tall to fit under typical kitchen cabinets), heavy, loud, and very, very effective. Like most, we've burned through any number of typical home blenders. The Vita-Mix blenders last.
Customer service is superb. We've had exactly one problem - the variable speed dial got really difficult to turn. With about two weeks go to on the original 5-year warranty (warranties have changed since - they're longer now), Vita-Mix fixed the base, including paying shipping both ways, and also told us to send along the container so they could make sure it was in good shape - and then replaced the blade for us.
Vita-Mix blenders come with a tamper, and a lid designed to take the tamper. Most of the time you don't need it. It comes in handy for very thick, very cold blends, like thick smoothies, ice cream, etc. You will absolutely, positively need to have a tamper - or stop and use a scraper - with ANY blender, no matter how powerful, the shape of the container, or configuration of the blades. "Tamper" is actually something of a misnomer. While it is used to tamp at times, it actually changes the mixing dynamics by effectively taking up part of the volume at the center of the container, eliminating cavitation in mixes where that's helpful.
The Vita-Mix base units are heavy because they use heavy-duty motors. Don't be taken in by competing companies' horsepower claims with lighter-duty motors with half the weight. The competitors hit higher horsepower ratings by running their motors at higher speeds. All blender motors run fast, of course, and bumping up the horsepower by pulling more amps this way can be appropriate for some motor applications, but you can't consider one factor in a vacuum. The Vita-Mix motors are heavy, and heavy motors last longer by using heavier cores and windings, both of which make the motor stand up longer to heavy use and heat without breaking down. Vita-Mix containers also employ a heavy flywheel below the blades. That, in conjunction with the heavier-duty motor, is what gives you longevity, and the ability to chop heavy stuff for years. If you look at the motor-to-container connector, you will also see that the Vita-Mix uses a larger diameter connector - less stress, more life, and lower possibility of stripping.
I do wish they were quieter, but the competitors are in the same ballpark, claims to the contrary notwithstanding. The height can be dealt with by simply storing the container away from the base (which we leave on the countertop). My only real complaint is the cost of extra containers. I'd love one of the 32oz containers, but think $100-$120 (typical price at a fair)is too much.

Crystal Clear Ice Crusher Review

Crystal Clear Ice Crusher
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We're very disappointed in this ice crusher, as most of its metal parts began rusting after less than a month of daily use. We have owned several versions of this manual crusher over the years: black plastic and chrome ones from the 1960's (one "hand-me-down", and a second tag-sale find); a Swing-Away (?) plastic version with a vacuum base; and two of this particular one.
For the first week or so, this did an ok job, though it did tend to slide around the counter during use. (The vacuum base on our previous crusher helped avoid this problem.) This crusher is made out of a rigid, clear plastic; we didn't get to use it long enough to see if it would hold up as well as the sightly flexible, translucent plastic of our previous vacuum-based model.
The key problem was that the metal parts of this crusher began rusting within a couple of weeks. (The same problem ruined our prior vacuum-based model, though it took a year or two to occur there.) Unfortunately, the rust began appearing just after the 30-day return period ended.
We've since purchased the electric Waring Pro Professional Ice Crusher through Amazon; while it was considerably more expensive, it seems to work very well and there is no sign of rusting. If you use a crusher at all frequently, I'd suggest spending more for the Waring.

Vita-Mix 1319 Professional Series, Onyx Review

Vita-Mix 1319 Professional Series, Onyx

This blender beats the competition by a mile. There are several things that set it apart besides the power and design, which allows perfectly smooth smoothies, sauces and soups if you want them that way. I reviewed a previous model that is no longer available and notice there's a new model out that doesn't have the middle knob. While you'd still get the easy cleanup, power and reliability of the Vita-Mix, that knob (which is on this model) is something I really value because it allows you to change the speed by infinite degrees during processing.
I find this particularly important when processing hot liquids as you can get a wet 'explosion' if you try to start a blending process too fast, which causes the heat to suddenly expand the contents. I did this once with my small personal blender--bad idea. With this Vita-mix model, you can start at a very low speed and turn the speed up gradually to high. Starting at a slow speed also gets larger items broken up so a good flow can be established to the blending process sooner. I've found the speed control greatly enhances the ability to get the results I want, including dicing small quantities instead of pureeing them, if needed.
I've had my unit for years and have never had any problems. It's a great machine. It gets most any job done just the way you want it. It's no wonder professional chefs choose Vita-Mix over others. Highly recommended.

Back to Basics Blue Raspberry Syrup Review

Back to Basics Blue Raspberry Syrup

I did not buy these syrups for snow cones or frozen ices. I usually mix these bad boys with a blender full of ice, alil cranberry maybe and a flavored vodka.(I call them "sloshed puppies") They add great flavor and bring you back to the days of drinking slush puppies and slurpies only this time there's booze involved. I highly recommend them in all flavors.-HOWEVER the shipping usually takes a while when its super saver shipping so order far ahead of any parties you may be throwing.

Remanufactured Breville XXBBL600XL IKON Hemisphere Blender Review

Remanufactured Breville XXBBL600XL IKON Hemisphere Blender
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is my second Breville blender. The first lasted about a year and a half which is probably OK considering that we use it at least once a day every day. I liked it because it was powerful, fairly quiet, and nicely designed. There were a couple of little problems but Customer Support took care of those.
The second blender, which I bought this summer, started to leak between the glass jar and the metal cuff about six weeks after I bought it. I called Customer Support and the man I talked to wanted to charge me $40 for a new jar. I said that this was clearly a manufacturing defect so he said, "Meet us halfway. Send us pictures of the jar." So I e-mailed pictures of the jar with the problem area marked in red. Nothing happened. I called back and got a woman this time. She acted as though my pictures had been received but said they had to be evaluated and that she would call me the next day. No call. I called a third time, got a man who I'm pretty sure was the same one I'd talked to before, though he seemed not to have heard of any of this. He said that my pictures had not arrived and told me to re-send them, which I did. I also sent copies to myself, which got through just fine. Nothing happened.
This is a nice blender but basically you're buying it without a warranty. Fortunately we saved the jar from the first blender so we don't have to lay out $40 in order to use it.

With its powerful 750-watt motor and sleek-looking die-cast base, this blender works great for everything from protein shakes to pureed soup or margaritas on the weekends. Its flat push-button control pad offers a backlit easy-to-read digital timer and five speed settings, which include mix, chop, blend, liquefy, and puree, as well as a pulse function and two preset programs for ice crushing and smoothies. The unit's patented Hemisphere bowl/blade system uses a large, semicircle shredding blade positioned to hug the uniquely shaped bowl, leaving no inactive zones around the blades so that all ingredients get thoroughly blended. For added convenience, the blender's 54-ounce engineering-grade borosilicate glass jar resists scratching, chipping, and fogginess, while baked-enamel measurement markings, in both cups and liters, make it easy to accurately measure out ingredients. The blending jar also provides a tight-fitting lid with a loop for simple removal, a generous handle, and a drip-free spout for graceful serving. The bowl/blade system locks into place with a leak-free seal, and the blade can easily be removed for safe cleaning of the jar and bowl/blade system. All parts, except for the base, are dishwasher-safe, and the control pad wipes clean quickly thanks to its crevice-free design.
